As a UM student, do I get financial compensation?
No, student participants do not receive financial compensation. However, project related costs such as travelling or purchasing any required materials are covered by the Service Science Factory. However, some other non-financial but very important benefits can be gained from being part of the Service Science Factory. On the one side, each project is a great learning experience since you get to work aside different people with different academic and cultural backgrounds. Moreover you get to meet representatives of companies and go through workshops and presentations held by inspiring and interesting people. On the other side, being part of the Service Science Factory offers you the chance to expand your professional network and add an exciting work experience to your CV. Think of all the opportunities that can arise from being a project team member, such as discovering a future research interest (for your Bachelor or Master thesis for instance) or collaborating with your project company in the future.
Can I get ECTS credits?
Please contact your Faculty or School to discuss opportunities for internships and/or thesis credits.
When does it start/end?
Each project is run for a period of eight to ten weeks depending on holidays and the academic calendar. The next two sets of projects start on the 28th of March and the 16th of May respectively and they both end with a Service Science Café (including the final project presentations) on the 1st of June and the 15th of July respectively. We will be rolling three to five different projects in each period so check out the Join us! section of our website for descriptions of each project as well as details on why and how you should apply.
On which day do the meetings take place? For how long?
The work schedule at the Service Science Factory is quite flexible. Since it’s a team-based project you get to set your appointments within the team, based on each participant’s availability. Thus, setting meetings and assigning tasks are at the team’s discretion so you don’t have to be in our office every day. There will be some appointments with fixed dates, such as progress assessment meetings or energizing workshop, but they will be announced well in advance.
Concerning the length of the meetings, again it depends on each project and each team. In the beginning you might need to have longer meetings to discuss the service challenge and brainstorm various approaches you might pursue. After you’ve clarified the direction you want to follow and tasks have been assigned within the team you might only need to meet for brief progress updates. The bottom line is that being part of a Service Science Factory project is a very flexible and dynamic process that aims to empower you to work and collaborate in a way that helps you unleash your potential.
